| About the label |
This label was created to release music that we believe in and try to do so in a manner that rights some of the wrongs of the record industry in recent times past. Part of this will be accomplished by emulating labels that we respect and part of it will be by trying to approach things in a way that takes into account new technologies, their strengths and what's missing from today's experience of buying and listening to music. We believe in Capitalism, as we believe that it, more than any other
economic system, favors the individual...especially the creative individual.
We also believe that for it to work properly, it takes responsible people
who care about the world and their communities and not just their bottom
line. The record industry has been asleep at the wheel and it's time to make changes so the the music makers and listeners of today and the future can both be happy. |
| About the word "Usonian" |
Usonia is a word that Frank Lloyd Wright, who popularized the term, attributed to Samuel Butler. He started using it while overseas in Europe. According to his account, when he'd tell people he was from the U.S.A. they'd ask if (or assume) he meant the Union of South Africa. Hoping to avoid confusion he thought it'd be best if he more specifically stated he was from the United States of North America (U.S.o.N.A.). Thinking that this great land deserved a proper name rather than an acronym he began using Usonia instead. He believed that the fact that our United States of America as a country was being referred to simply as "America" here and abroad was really selling short the true and unique nature of this new nation. This country deserved a name of it's own. However, the name holds even more significance as this was the name he applied to an idea that he had of creating housing that any American could afford. Housing that would be an individual, organic work of art, appropriate to it's surroundings, that would enrich the lives of it's owners and all who entered it. While, over the years, the form that the Usonian home took would vary radically in size, material and complexity (as well as price), many tended to be small, cozy homes that utilized inexpensive modern materials such as concrete block and plywood. Regardless of any stigma associated with them, these materials are just as good as any other (and better from a perspective of cost) if they are used appropriately to their strengths. This is exactly what Mr.Wright did. Staying true to form, Mr. Wright would design all of the furniture (much of which was built-in) and create a home form fit to the needs of the family who commissioned it. There were, of course, many instances of final costs exceeding the stated budgets of the client, but they found ways to overcome this (as people do). To me the word embodies a comprehensive ideal. To me it symbolizes humanity at it's best. To me it means freedom, individuality and beauty. Mr. Wright means a great deal to me. He was certainly an individual, a great artist, a champion of American Democracy, a philosopher, an inspiration to many and, I believe, a genius. We are not affiliated in any way with any of the official organizations that preserve and/or teach the legacy of Mr. Wright. However, on our links page you will find links to several of them. I urge you to experience and support what is left of his legacy. It will change your life. |
